The Vincentians first came to Mill Hill in 1889 to work in the chaplaincy and directorship of the Sisters of Charity at their Central House for Great Britain and Ireland. This work included the chaplaincy, hearing the confessions of the sisters and novices, spiritual direction, the visitation and direction of the sisters in their various houses and the confessions and instructions in the large orphanage attached to the Central House.
In 1893, the rector of the Parish of Hendon, the Very Rev. Cannon Carter offered a portion of his parish to the Vincentians. This portion was Mill Hill. Initially, the chapel of the Sisters of Charity served as the parish church. As time passed, Mill Hill became quite a dense residential parish and a new church was needed. This is the present day Church of the Sacred Heart.
