Pope John Paul II distinguished three categories of people:
- People to whom Christ is not known
- The healthy mature Christian communities that are fervent in their faith
- Groups of baptised who have lost a living sense of faith
He found it painfully clear that many Catholics and other Christians had not been effectively incorporated into life in Christ. They were baptised as infants but had never made a personal commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then as adolescents and adults, they drift away from the Church. Evangelisation must be directed to the Church itself.
