Vincent found that while a lot of good men joined the Congregation to serve the poor, quite a few left when faced with trials. He struggled long and hard to try and rectify this. To him stability was the first and most basic of all the vows. It is a promise to remain in the Congregation evangelise the poor until God calls us home to Him.
How do we practice this in a modern world?
- accept the Lord’s love – it is a key factor in the self acceptance that ground stability
- be grateful for God’s gifts especially for one’s calling to serve the poor
- avoid bitterness and negative criticism – they corrode the heart of the individual and eat away at the life of the group
- renew your commitment frequently – remind yourself of the promises you made and why
